Abstract
426,228. Wireless signalling. ARMSTRONG, E. H., 211, Central Park West, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 24, 1934, No. 2436. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1933. [Class 40 (v)] Relates to means for reducing the ratio of valve " hiss " to signal strength, particularly in shortwave signalling. A wide band of frequency modulation is used, in combination with currentlimiters, and the signal is received on a circuit Fig. 2, comprising a pair of balanced detectors 56, 57, of the same general type as that described in Specification 290,642, which respond cumulatively to frequency-modulated variations and differentially to any amplitude variations. Assuming that an unmodulated carrier of 200 K.C., Fig. 5, is being received, audible valve " hiss " arising from filament variations is limited to the range from 190 to 210 K.C., and since the " reactance " characteristics of the two input circuits 52, 54 and 53, 55, Fig. 2, (represented by the curves AB and CD in Fig. 5) are equal and opposite this effect is wiped out. Hiss due to frequency variations is represented by OP-OQ, Fig. 5, plus OS-OR or PQ + SR in all, whilst signal strength is represented by OM<1>+ON<1>. On a six-metre wave it is stated that tube noise is reduced by this method to one per cent of that normally experienced. Specification 426,227 also is referred to.
