Sept. 26, 1932, No. 26688. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 26, 1932]. [Class 40 (v).] In a high-frequency receiving system the carrier frequency and one sideband are separated from the other sideband, rectified and passed to the translating device. The other sideband and the carrier frequency may be passed to another detector and the output from the two detectors combined additively to give increased output. Fig. 1 shows a superheterodyne receiver for phase-modulated waves comprising high and intermediate frequency amplifiers 4, 6 and filters A, B each accepting one sideband and the mean intermediate frequency, corresponding to the carrier frequency in a plain receiver. The output from the filters is passed to detectors 12, 18, the outputs of which are combined in phase opposition. For amplitude modulation the detector outputs are combined in parallel. For receiving frequency-modulated waves, a filter 15 is interposed in the audiofrequency circuit, designed to give an output to input ratio which rises proportionally with the frequency. This filter may alternatively be incorporated in the audio-frequency circuit at the transmitter. The invention is mainly applicable to the prevention of fading.
