Abstract

527,666. Modulating systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 18, 1939, No. 11722. Convention date, April 19, 1938. [Class 40 (v)] A suppressed-carrier system includes the steps of phase or frequency modulating a high-frequency oscillation by a lower-frequency wave of constant amplitude, the amount of phase-swing of the latter being varied by the signal voltage. Or the carrierwave may be phase or frequency modulated by a lower-frequency wave of constant amplitude, and the characteristic of the modulated high-frequency wave varied in accordance with the signal voltage. In both cases, the amount of phase-modulation of the carrier is so chosen that, in the characteristic energyequation, the Bessel function of zero order vanishes, giving a radiated spectrum which is substantially free of carrier-frequency. In Fig. 1 the carrier is fed from a source 1 to a modulator 3 which is coupled to an aerial or linewire 5. The modulator 3 receives the output from a phase or frequency modulator 4 fed with a lowerfrequency wave from 2 and with signals from 6. In reception the signals arriving at 7 are passed first through a wide-band tuner 8 and then to a phasemodulation detector 9, which delivers a frequencymodulated wave (similar to that impressed by 4 upon 3) to a suitably-tuned circuit 10. This, in turn, feeds a frequency-modulation detector 11, from which the original signal is passed to a loud speaker 14. It is not necessary to re-introduce the suppressed carrier-wave at the receiving end.
