Abstract

448,448. Wireless receiving systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London.-(Assignees of Crosby, M. G.; Riverhead, Long Island, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 6, 1934, No. 35113. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1933. [Class 40 (v)] Relates to receivers for phase or frequency modulated carrier waves and comprises dividing the received energy into two portions the degree of modulation of one portion being reduced by frequency division before combination with the other portion in correct relative phase to produce amplitude modulation. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the energy from the aerial A passes to a radio frequency amplifier 1, frequency changer 2, intermediate frequency amplifier 3 and amplitude limiter 4, the output from which is divided into two portions. One portion is fed to a multi-vibrator frequency divider 5, the circuit of which is shown in Fig. 5, the divided frequency being restored to the original intermediate frequency by a heterodyne frequency changer 6, passed to phase adjusters 7, 14 and fed in push pull through transformer 15, to detector valves 17, 18. The other portion of the divided output from the limiter 4 is fed in parallel to these valves through transformer 16, the outputs from the valves, one of which may be reversed in phase by the switch 19, being combined in the transformer 20 feeding the utilization means 21. A further pair of detectors 8, 9 similarly fed produce potentials which are applied to control the frequency of the local oscillator of the frequency changer 2. The receiver may be adapted to receive amplitude modulated signals by placing the switches S, S1 in their second position which applies the output direct from the amplifier 3 to the detectors. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the portion of the signals which is divided in frequency is not reconverted to the intermediate frequency but is combined with a second portion which is reduced to the same frequency by heterodyning. U.S.A. Specification 616,803 is referred to.
