In a transmission system in which a main carrier is modulated by a band of frequencies, an auxiliary carrier which is modulated in a manner representing the frequency difference between the main carrier and auxiliary carrier is transmitted in a frequency band outside that occupied by the sidebands due to the said band of frequencies. At the receiver the auxiliary carrier and its modulation are combined so as to reconstitute the main carrier and the reconstituted main carrier is used for demodulation purposes. At the transmitter, Fig. 2, the auxiliary carrier frequency is generated at 6 and supplied via a phase adjuster 7 to a frequency divider of ratio 1/n=<SP>1</SP>/32. The output of the frequency divider is frequency multiplied by n - 1 at 9 and is also supplied to a frequency divider 11 of ratio <SP>1</SP>/ m =<SP>1</SP>/ 10 . The (n-1)th harmonic is amplified at 12 and fed to a ring modulator 1 which also receives the baseband signal for transmission, and the output is supplied via sideband filter 2 to frequency-changers 4 and 5 providing the required transmitting frequency. The output of oscillator 6 is modulated at 13 with the frequency divided signal <SP>1</SP>/ m and fed to the common output 3. Supervisory signals also may be fed in at 14 to the modulator 13. After frequency-changing at the receiver, Fig. 3, the incoming signal is fed to a terminal 3<SP>1</SP> and a filter 15 selects the auxiliary carrier with its characteristic modulation. After amplification at 16 the auxiliary carrier is fed to a demodulator 18, the supervisory signal being selected at 20 and fed to an output 21 and also used via terminal 22 for gain control. The characteristic modulation is selected at 23 and multiplied by m=10 at 24 and fed to a frequency-changer 27. A narrow band filter 19 supplies the auxiliary carrier frequency via a phase adjuster 26 to the frequencychanger 27 and the difference frequency, which equals the main carrier frequency, is passed via a filter 28 and amplifier 29 to a demodulator 30. The received signal also is supplied via a filter 31 to the demodulator 30 which provides at its output the baseband signal.
