Abstract

613,855. Frequency modulation; testing tuned circuits ; BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and KING, A. H. Jan. 22, 1946, No. 2105. [Class 40 (v)] In a frequency modulated oscillator having a thermionic reactance in shunt with its tuned circuit, the magnitude of the thermionic reactance is controlled by a resistance and condenser in series, the condenser being connected between the cathode and grid of the thermionic reactance and varied with a main tuning condenser. As shown, a thermionic reactance V2 is connected across the tuned circuit 4, 3 of an oscillator V1. A modulating voltage, which may be derived from a oscilloscope time-base circuit, is applied to the control grid of the reactance 15. The quadrature voltage for the grid of V2 is taken from the junction of resistance 10, and condenser 11, which is ganged with tuning condenser 4 of the oscillator VI. Condenser 11 is arranged to follow <3>/2 power law with respect to condenser 4. This ensures that the frequency sweep of the oscillator remains constant at different mean frequencies. The condensers 4, 11 may follow the same law, and a shunt trimming condenser 14 and padding condenser 13 be provided to make the effective capacity in the tuned circuit follow the rerequired law. The oscillator may be used to test tuned circuits.
