Abstract
571,627. Modulating systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 21, 1943, No. 17374. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] Amplitude-modulated waves are broken up into short pulses, the duration of which is continually variable with the signal volume. Amplitude-modulated carrier is fed to the output 2 from a carrier amplifier valve 1 fed by a carrier source 8 ; modulating voltage being applied at terminals 11 to vary the anode voltage. The H.T. supply from battery 13 to valve 1 passes through a radio-frequency choke 9, speech choke 12, and electronic switch 14 so that carrier is emitted to load circuit 2 in pulses, the duration and spacing of which is dependent on the pulse voltage applied to the grid of the switch valve 14. These pulses are supplied through an amplifier 28 and transformer 29 by a multi-vibrator 15, 16 synchronized by a control oscillator 25, the frequency of which is higher than the highest signal frequency. Variation in the ratio of pulse period to gap period is effected by voltages applied to the grid of the valve 15 from a condenser 39 connected to a full-wave rectifier circuit 37, 38 fed from the divided secondary coil 36 of the modulation transformer 41. The pulse period is thus variable according to the signal volume.
