Abstract

563,385. Valve modulating circuits. FFENNELL, H. S. MOLYNEUX-, and VACUUM-SCIENCE PRODUCTS, Ltd. Feb. 5, 1943, No. 1980. [Class 40 (v)] In a tone-modulated radio telegraphy system, the tone frequency comprises pulses of which at least the positive halves are of square form, the pulses being generated in a multi-vibrator circuit, and applied to a grid of the carrier wave generator valve, or to a grid of an output valve following that generator, so that the output valve passes current only during the positive halves of the pulses, and operates with increased efficiency. As shown, the pulses are generated in a multi-vibrator V1, and the carrier wave in a back-coupled oscillator valve V2. Both outputs are fed to the control grid 26 of the output valve V3 which grid is negatively biassed at GB - through a leak resistance 32 and radio frequency choke 25. The bias is such that only the positive halves of the pulses allow current to pass in the valve V3. Keying is effected by a switch 42 in the cathode lead of the valve V3. In a modified circuit, the pulses from V1 are applied to a grid of the generator valve V2 so as to suppress or reduce oscillation during the negative halves of the pulses, the output valve being biassed so as to be non-conducting during the negative halves.
