Abstract

665,823. Velocity-modulated tubes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Aug. 1, 1947 [June 28, 1945], No. 21029/47. Class 39 (i). In a frequency multiplier velocity-modulated tube, an input cavity resonator 40 is coupled to the electron beam between the cathode 77<SP>1</SP> and an accelerator grid 69 to modulate both the current-density and the velocity of the beam; the beam then passes through a drift space 75 and an output cavity resonator 89 tuned to a harmonic of the input frequency. The physical size of the resonator 46 for a given fundamental resonant frequency is reduced by providing a flange 52 on the inner wall 48 to introduce an effective lumped capacitance. The cavity resonators may be tunable. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an embodiment in which a parallel resonant lumped constant circuit is connected between the cathode and the accelerator grid. The inductance of the circuit is constituted by a winding which contains and so shields from high frequency, the cathode leads. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
