Abstract

586,134. Velocity-modulated tubes. MAYO, B. J., and BARFORD, N. C. Dec. 7, 1943, No. 20476. [Class 39 (i)] In electron oscillation generators using a single hollow resonator as described in Specification 528,041, the resonator comprises a cylindrical outer conductor 3 and a concentric inner conductor 4 ; the electron beam is generated by an annular cathode 6 opposite a grid 5, or an annular series of apertures, and passes radially through the resonator to the conductor 4. Alternatively, the cathode may be centrally disposed inside a mesh electrode and the electrode 6' may be the collecting electrode. Leakage of high-frequency energy may be minimized by sleeves 7, 8, an odd number of quarter-wavelengths long surrounding the central conductor, or by the means described in Specification 562,674. Tuning means may be provided, for example, an adjustable piston, and energy may be extracted by a concentric line or wave-guide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 516,750.
