Abstract
579,648. Discharge apparatus. MAYO, B. J., and HOLMAN, H. E. Feb. 17, 1942, No. 2122. [Class 39 (i)] In electric resonators such as used with velocity modulation electron discharge tubes tuning is effected by a plunger 18, Fig. 1, which is not directed towards the gap 6 in the resonator 5. Where a ribbon beam as described in Specification 574,512 is employed, the plunger axis is parallel to the long dimension of the gap. The resonator is made in two parts supported from the rods 9 and with hemispherical ends; the plunger may pass across one of these ends. A coupling-out loop 22 is carried by the end cap 19 ; extensions 20, 21 to the envelope house the plunger and loop. These extensions may be surrounded by metal sleeves to prevent escape of energy. In a modification with a toroidal resonator 26, the plungers 32, 33 are arranged along chords of the resonator and are adjusted together by gearing 34, 35, 36. Resonators as described in Specification 577,037 may have similar tuning means. Specification 530,785 also is referred to.
