Abstract

582,173. Velocity - modulated tubes. PEARCE, A. F., and BARFORD, N. C. Aug. 11, 1942, No. 11257. [Class 39 (i)] In a velocity modulation discharge device of the kind in which an electron beam passes through an oscillatory field set up between a pair of large grids disposed across the apertures of a hollow resonator which encircles the beam, the spacing between the grids and/or the sizes of the spaces in one or both grids are so adjusted that the energy transfer between the beam and the resonator is rendered substantially uniform over the cross-section of the beam. As shown in Fig. 1, the grids 5, 6 of a toroidal resonator 4 are outwardly dished so that the transit time of electrons passing between the centres of the grids is increased in relation to the transit time of electrons passing near the edges of the grids. A similar effect may be obtained with flat grids by reducing the sizes of the meshes at the outer portion of the grid, as shown in Fig. 2. A grid consisting of a number of thin concentric conducting rings, connected together by radial ribs may have the spacing between the rings graded, as shown in Fig. 3.
