[Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XL (a)] In an electron discharge device (see Group XL (a)) for producing phase and frequency modulation, a planar disc of electrons emanating from a central cathode 39, Fig. 6, has a sinusoidal edge produced by the polyphase energization of a plurality of control electrodes 21<SP>1</SP> arranged in groups on one side of the electron disc opposite a neutral electrode arranged on the other side of the disc. Due to the polyphase energization of the control electrodes, the sinusoidal wave at the edge of the electron disc advances around the disc at the frequency of the polyphase carrier wave. The electrons fall on one or other of two anodes arranged concentric with the cathode in accordance with the progression of the sinusoidal wave at the edge of the disc to produce an output voltage at the polyphase carrier frequency. The inner anode 6, Fig. 5, has openings 51, 52 through which electrons may pass to the outer anode. As shown, the wave 53 represents the edge of the electron disc at the instant when all the electrons pass through the openings 51, 52 and are collected by the outer anode. At the instant represented by the wave 54 all the electrons are collected by the inner anode 6. This voltage is modulated by a modulating magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the disc to advance or retard the sinusoidal wave at the edge of the disc with respect to its unmodulated position. The anodes may be constructed to provide a three-phase output.
