Abstract

539,315. Electron beam apparatus ; electronic distributors. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. April 9, 1940, No. 6356. Convention date, May 27, 1939. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An electronic distributer comprises a cathode surrounded by a number of anodes and the electrons are concentrated into a beam and focused on the anodes in succession by a rotating magnetic field; the beam may be suppressed on one side of the cathode by an electrostatic field rotating in synchronism with the magnetic field. The anodes 22 surrounding the cathode 19 are separated by screens 26 which may serve as electrodes for concentrating the beam on to one side of the cathode as before mentioned. The rotating field may be produced by a rotating magnet or by two-phase or polyphase currents in windings like those of an induction motor ; a single-phase source may be used with phase-splitting capacities. The current may be modulated by a grid surrounding the cathode. Fig. 12 shows the invention applied to multiplex telegraphy. The distributers are furnished with slotted accelerator electrodes 41. The beam in the sending distributer is modulated by slotted electrodes 43 opposite to the anodes 22 and connected to the input sources. The anodes 22 are connected to each other and to the grid 33 of the receiving distributer and the electron beams in the two distributers are caused to rotate by synchronously rotating magnetic fields. The anodes 22 of the receiving distributer are connected to the output circuits 35.
