Abstract

588,140. Velocity modulated tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Jan. 19, 1944, No. 1079. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] Oscillations are generated by the interaction of an annular beam of electrons or other charged par - ticles with the electromagnetic field in a resonator formed by rotating a cross-section of the character shown in Fig. 2 about the axis 34, 35, so as to provide annular gaps and drift space. The transit time through the drift space is one-quarter cycle or an integral number of cycles plus a quarter cycle, the resonator being constrained, by the presence of posts 23, to oscillate in a mode in which both ends of the drift space have always the same instantaneous voltage. In form shown, the resonator comprises an outer U-shaped annulus 22, Fig. 1, sealed partly through the envelope 11, and two inner discs 30, 31. The annulus and the discs have flanged edges bent inwardly towards two circular conductive bands 24, 29 forming the drift space. Discs 30, 31 and band 29 are held together by rods 33, 35 and the whole inner structure is supported from band 24 by spacers 32. The annular beam produced by cathode 12 and concentrating electrodes 19 passes successively across gaps 27, 28 to collector 13. Velocity modulation occurs at gap 27 and the bunched beam delivers energy to the field at gap 28. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the resonator need not extend to the central axis. This subjectmatter does not occur in the Specification as accepted.
