Abstract

791,735. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1956 [March 16, 1955], No. 7701/55. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(b)] A magnetron output circuit is so arranged that on the commencement of a train of oscillations it presents the magnetron with a high ouput Q factor and thus allows a rapid build up of r.f. oscillation in the magnetron. When the build up of voltage has been completed a fraction of the output is reflected back to the magnetron by a suitably positioned reflector, e.g., a post 6, to effect a reduction in the Q factor thus enabling extraction of substantial r.f. power. The magnetron 1 is coupled to the output guide 7 by means of a tapered slot 4 whose width and degree of coupling to anode resonator 3 are adjusted to provide a high external Q factor for the system. The distance of the resonator 3 from the post 6 should correspond to an integral number n of half-wavelengths plus an amount which is less than an eighth wavelength. The value of n may be four times the number of cycles required for build up. A reflectionless window 5 provides a vacuum seal and is situated either beyond the post 6 or between the post and the magnetron at a point of minimum voltage of the standing wave pattern produced by the post. The invention may be applied to a co-axial line output system.
