Abstract

1,208,700. Velocity-modulated tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 15 Oct., 1969 [15 Oct., 1968], No. 50760/69. Heading H1D. A velocity-modulation microwave tube includes means for projecting a stream of electrons over an elongated beam path along which are arranged a plurality of wave-supporting structures which include an input circuit 6; an output circuit 9; a resonator circuit 13, which includes at least one floating resonator tuned to a pass-band frequency, immediately preceding the output circuit; and a floating resonator 11 tuned to a harmonic of a pass-band frequency-preferably the second harmonicbetween the input circuit and the resonator circuit, whereby both bunching, and the uniformity of electron velocity within the bunches at the output circuit, are enhanced. The resonator circuit 13 may include two (as shown] or more floating fundamental frequency resonators; two harmonic frequency resonators 11 may be employed (Fig. 3, not shown), which may be tuned to a higher harmonic than the second; and the resonators may, alternatively, be resonant slow-wave structures, e.g. of simple helix, cross-wound helix or coupled cavity type.
