Abstract

1368410 Velocity-modulated tubes NIPPON ELECTRIC CO Ltd 16 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 18258/73 Heading H1D A velocity-modulation tube includes, in order, an input resonator circuit, first and second resonator circuits, and an output resonator circuit, the first resonator circuit having a resonant frequency lower than the centre frequency of the operating pass band, and the normalized length of its immediately succeeding drift space being larger than that immediately succeeding any of the other kinds of resonator circuit, but not being larger than 90 degrees, in terms of the reduced plasma angle. The first resonator circuit may be constituted by a plurality of separate resonators, each separately satisfying the above resonant frequency and drift space condition. Preferably, the first and second resonator circults have resonant frequencies lying respectively below and above the lower and upper edges of the pass band, and the drift spaces may be as indicated on the drawing for the embodiment shown, which has a second resonator circuit formed by two resonators 23 and 26. It is stated that the arrangement permits the electron beam-which tends to be debunched by the action of the gap 20 of the low frequency resonator 19-to be rebunched in the drift space 22 without undue increase in length of the device.
