Abstract
945,510. Velocity-modulated beam tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. May 3, 1961 [May 25, 1960], No. 16063/61. Heading H1D. A broad-band multicavity-klystron amplifier comprises a plurality of re-entrant driver cavities apertured for the passage of the electron beam therethrough and disposed along the beam path, a plurality of the driver cavities being tuned to different frequencies within a frequency band which includes the pass band of the tube, at least one of the driver cavities being tuned to a frequency near the high frequency end of the pass band, and a second of the driver cavities, disposed upstream of the first driver cavity, being tuned to a frequency near the low frequency end of the pass band and having an interaction gap length of at least 1.5 radians of the electronic drift angle at the mid-band frequency. As shown, Fig. 1, the cavity resonators 13, 14, 15 are interconnected by a plurality of axially aligned drift tubes 17, and they may all have an interaction gap of at least 1.5 radians of the electronic drift angle at the mid-band frequency. The output circuit comprises two intercoupled cavity resonators 25, 26, Fig. 3, tuned to the mid-band frequency, preferably as described in Specification 906,207. The cavities are tuned by a plurality of tuner shafts 47 operated by means remote from the device. Provision is made for fluid cooling via input and output ports 51, 52.
