Abstract

550,081. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 28, 1941, No. 9580. Convention date, July 27, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In a magnetron producing oscillations of high order the anode comprises eight radially directed vanes 73 arranged cylindrically. The vanes are each the length of a half-wave of the desired oscillation and are surrounded by a sheath 77 and closed at each end by metallic discs 74, 75 so as to form a closed resonant chamber ; an opening 78 is left between one pair of vanes through which radiation can pass. The filamentary cathode 71 is tensioned by a spring 14. The electrons may be supplied from an indirectly-heated cathode at one end. A known form is described in which the vanes are not enclosed and are conductively connected at each end by rings ; a close metallic resonator surrounds the device and is tuned to assist the oscillations in the rotating space charge. A circular loop surrounding the device coaxially takes off power through a concentric line. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a form in which the vanes are bridged by a conductive ring in the centre. In a form in which the electrons are supplied from one end, pairs of horn-like members at anode and cathode potential are provided at each end to give the desired concentration of space charge within the anode. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
