Abstract

1,076,347. Klystrons; travelling wave tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Sept. 24, 1965 [Oct. 1, 1964], No. 40818/65. Heading H1D. A high-frequency electron discharge device, e.g. a two-cavity klystron or a travelling wave tube, has an ion draining electrode asymmetrically disposed with respect to the beam axis as described in Specification 1,038,057 in which the electrode is self biased negatively by having a portion made from a material which has an effective secondary emission ratio which is less than one for the energy of the electrons impacting the electrode. The electrode is disposed within the collector electrode and is bombarded by primary and/or secondary electrons. The electrode is preferably a block or layer of tungsten or niobium supported upon an alumina, sapphire or beryllia block. Alternatively graphite or carbon black may be used. The electrode may also be located within the cathode or drift tube regions.
