Abstract

1286193 Beam discharge tubes VARIAN ASSOCIATES 12 Feb 1970 [16 June 1969] 6876/70 Addition to 1191755 Heading HID An electron gun comprising a concave cathode 2 with a plurality of concave emissive surfaces 6 each aligned with an aperture in an adjacent control grid 7, as described in the parent Specification, is characterized by the provision of a second grid 66 aligned with the first grid and disposed in recesses 67 in the cathode. The grid 66 may be coated with electron emission inhibiting material such as carbon, zirconium, iridium or titanium, and prevents emission from the underlying areas of the cathode, especially when the cathode is a dispenser cathode. The grid may be at the same potential as the cathode and may be cooled through a tubular metal support 68 which is preferably cooled and which is insulated by heat shields 71. In Fig. 1 the grid 66 is spaced from the recesses 67, but in a modification (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the grid is brazed to the bottom of each recess and the cooled support 68 is omitted. The gun may be used in the tubes described in the parent Specification.
