Abstract
1,000,811. Heavy-ion-beam tubes. HIGH VOLTAGE ENGINEERING CORPORATION. July 17, 1961, No. 25772/61. Heading H1D. A D.C. particle accelerator of the electrostatic belt type has at least two high voltage terminals within a single tank supported centrally within a column comprising an assembly of conductive discs and intervening insulating annuli which constitute the acceleration tube for the particles, a charge transfer device in at least one of the terminals and a single endless charge-carrying belt passing through the column between pulleys arranged at the ends of the column. In the four-stage accelerator shown there are three high voltage terminals 3, 4, 5 with intermediate ground planes 11, 12. The first terminal 3 contains an electron adding device 15 to convert neutral particles to negative ions, or alternatively it contains a negative ion source. The second terminal 4 contains an electron stripper 16, e.g. a gas containing canal or a metal foil, and the third terminal 5 the target 17. An additional electron stripper may be provided after the particles have acquired additional energy beyond the positive terminal 4.
