Abstract
859,149. Particle accelerators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 2, 1959 [Nov. 11, 1958], No. 36240/58. Class 39(1). In a D.C. charged particle accelerator in which graded potentials are applied to an array of accelerator electrodes 5 distributed along the length of the acceleration tube, successive groups of electrodes B-E have apertures progressively decreasing in size, in order to trap stray electrons, moving in the opposite direction at the electrodes having minimum sized apertures. In the positive ion accelerator shown, the apertures in the first group of electrodes. A progressively increase in size so that these electrodes shield the initial portion of the beam from electrostatic wall charges. Group A may however be similar to the other group 5 of electrodes if the tube wall is made of slightly conducting materia to eliminate wall changes The beam is shielded along the tube from wall charges by annular rings 4. The in vention may be applied t( accelerators of negatively charged particles.
