Abstract

730,719. Particle accelerators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 4, 1953 [June 4, 1952], No. 14097/52. Class 39 (1). In a positive ion accelerator tube of the kind in which increasing potentials are applied to annular electrodes 6 distributed along the tube, an apertured masking diaphragm 9 is provided adjacent the source of ions together with one or more additional masking diaphragms 10 distributed along the length of the tube. Each of the diaphragms has a central aperture of small size relative to the apertures of the accelerating electrodes so that any charged or neutral particles which travel along paths which would allow them to bombard an electrode will be stopped by a diaphragm while at the same time the apertures of the diaphragms are of sufficient size to permit passage of the beam proper. The diaphragm 10 consists of truncated conical plates separated by spacers. It may be at a potential positive with respect to the preceding electrode to prevent the escape of any secondary electrons emitted by the diaphragm.
