Abstract

262,829. Dessauer, F., and Universitats Institut fur Physikalische Grundlagen der Medizin. Dec. 14, 1925, [Convention date]. Electric and magnetic appliances.- In order to influence animal life and biological reactions, an excess of positive or negative ions is imparted to a current of gas by first ionizing it, without the passage of an electric discharge, and then passing it through electric fields which retain as completely as possible the ions of underised polarity while allowing to pass, or accelerating, those of the desired polarity. The ionizing means 6 may be a source of R÷ntgen or ultra-violet rays, an incandescent platinumiridium sheet with or without a coating of alkaline earth, a Nernst rod, or one or more tungsten filaments, which may be thoriated. After passing through or around the ionizer 6, the gas traverses grids 7, 8, which may have a mesh of 2 mm. diameter. In order to obtain positively-charged gas, the first screen 7 may have a negative potential of 7 kilovolts and the second screen 8 and ionizer may be at zero potential. The dimensions of the apparatus, the electric fields, and the velocity of the gas must be proportioned in order to obtain the best results, and for this purpose the current of gas, the ionizer, and the electric fields and adjustable either independently or simultaneously. For negatively charging the gas, the grids 7 and .8 may have positive potentials of 4.5 and 9 kilovolts respectively. The field between the ionizer and first grid may be so high that further ions are produced by impact. Before treatment the gas may be passed through a cleaner 2 and meter 3. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), ionization may be produced by a high-frequency or continuous high-voltage discharge, which may be silent and invisible; also the cathode may be situated between the grids, and the controlling grid may be of plate form. This subject-matter does not form a part of the invention described in the Specification as accepted.
