Condenser telephones and other electrostaticinstruments. - A loud-speaker which does not employ any diaphragm or mechanical vibrator comprises an ionized stratum of air or an electrically charged gaseous path located between the electrodes of a condenser like device so as to beset in motion to reproduce sound. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the loud-speaker L, connected with the audio-frequency amplifier R as shown, comprises two perforated electrostaticelectrodes A, B associated with horns G, H. Perforated metallic members C, D, arranged between the electrodes A, B as shown, accommodate theionizers E, F in the form of arc-lamps or mercury valour lamps. In the modification, Fig. 2, the loud-speaker is ball-shaped and comprises an outer perforated electrode, L and an inner electrode J, coated with a preparation of radio-active substances K. Fig. 3 shows a construction similar to that shown in Fig. 1 but in which the members C, D are replaced by a single grid 0, an X-ray tube Q being employed as the ionizer. Only one horn P is provided in this arrangement, the lower electrode N being imperforate. In all cases, a gas, such as chlorine, may be introduced into the ionization chamber. Ionization may be produced by the application of high potentials to the electrodes, electric fields being used which remove the electrons from the ionization chamber and prevent a premature diffusion of the ions.
