Abstract

870,093. Ion sources. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 18, 1959 [June 23, 1958], No. 20073/58. Class 39(1). An ion source comprises a block 1, within which ions are formed by a heated filament 21 or by a collimated beam of electrons, and a pair of ion deflecting aperture plates 6, 7 so energised that an image 9 of the ion formation region is produced from which the ions appear to originate. The ions are accelerated as a beam through the apertures 10, 11. The size of the image 9 may be varied. Plate 6 may be in two halves at different potentials to align the beam. A third apertured plate 8 may be provided to limit the beam cross-section, the plate 8 being at the potential of plate 7 to avoid accelerating secondary electrons formed at plate 8 back to plate 7.
