Abstract

795,056. Particle accelerators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 8, 1955 [Sept. 8, 1954], No. 26036/54. Class 39(1). In a particle accelerator in which graded D.C. potentials are applied to an array of annular electrodes distributed along a tube through which the charged particles pass, a retarding field is set up in the neighbourhood of the surface of the particle emitting electrode, or of an apertured plate positioned between the emitting electrode and the accelerating electrodes, in order to reduce the emission from the surface of ions of the same polarity as the particles being accelerated. The retarding field may be produced by applying to the adjacent accelerating electrode or electrodes a potential of opposite polarity to that of the other accelerating electrodes. A grid 8 may be provided, as shown, across the opening of the first accelerating electrode 5. The grid may have a central opening just wide enough to permit passage of the beam, and the distance from grid to plate 2 is preferably not less than the distance between grid wires. The invention may be applied to a positive or negative ion accelerator. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 697,105.
