Abstract

961,334. Ion sources. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 28, 1962 [Sept. 4, 1961], No. 31739/61. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrometer ion source all the high voltage components, including ionization chamber 29 and half plates 44, 45 which are maintained at different potentials, are supported by the removable cover plate 3 and the low voltage components, including accelerator plate 14, are supported by the main body 2, 5 of the source chamber. The chamber 29 which is of the electron bombardment type is supported by heat chokes 41 from the plate 42 and the supports 43 for the plate 42 and the leads 47 to the chamber 29 are mounted on the plate 48. The supports 43 also carry the half plates 44, 45. The plate 48 is supported from the cover plate 3 by insulating pillars 28. The cover plate is located on the body 2 by an annular boss 53 and by long dowels 54. The channel 6 can be closed by valve mechanism 11. A variable slit device 7 such as described in Specification 960,237 together with the accelerator plate 14 are mounted on the wall 5. Heaters are provided in the body 2. Permanent magnets 38 for collimating the electron beam of the ionization chamber 29 are mounted on the body 2.
