Abstract

1,025,279. Discharge tubes. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Dec. 2, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No. 47522/63. Heading H1D. The ion detector for a mass spectrometer, e.g. a highfrequency quadruple spectrometer, has a thin conductive diaphragm 1, e.g. metal foil or conductive glass, struck on one side by the ions and on the other side by an electron beam 4 from electron gun 3, the electrons being reflected by the diaphragm 1 into an electron multiplier 10, but electrons corresponding to the collected ions being absorbed on the diaphragm 1. The diaphragm 1 acts as a vacuum seal between the mass spectrometer and the electron multiplier, which may therefore be highly evacuated. The electron beam is focused magnetically by the coils 6 and 7, and a decelerating electrode 11 may be positioned adjacent the diaphragm 1. If the envelope of the tube is metallic, the diaphragm 1 is mounted in an insulating, e.g. glass, ring.
