Abstract

562,914. Electron beam valves and circuits therefor. COSSOR, Ltd., A. G., JOFEH, L., and WILLIAMS, B. C. FLEMING-. May 7, 1941, No. 6197/42. Divided out of 560,689. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] In a beam deflection valve used as a mixer, two pairs of deflector plates 1, 2 and 3, 4, Fig. 1, receive the oscillations to be mixed, and a target 11 projects from one side into the electron stream, the target receiving current in dependence on the deflection produced by the first pair of plates. This current may be used to sustain local 'oscillations. The undeflected beam is focused on the edge of one-6-of two output electrodes to which a suitable sum or difference circuit 10 is connected. The circuits 8, 9, 10 may be connected to their associated electrodes in push-pull ; if plates 2 and 4 are both earthed, a single plate may replace the two. In a modification with curved electrodes 13, 14, 15, Fig. 2, such as described in the parent Specification, the beam is brought to two successive focii at the interposed target 11 and at the output 6, 7. A deflection voltage applied over the whole length of the electrodes produces a deflection of the intermediate focus, but not at the final focus. The target electrodes 6, 7 may be replaced by a pair of plates inductively coupled to the beam and forming the output electrodes. According to the Provisional Specification, the beam may be centred automatically by making the D.C. components of the deflector plate potentials dependent upon the D.C. components of the currents collected by the targets ; this may be effected by coupling the input and output circuits of the deflector plates and targets through condenser's while the D.C. connections are taken from'the source-through resistors to the targets and thence through resistors to the deflecting plates on the corresponding sides.
