Abstract

709,909. Cathode-ray tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 8, 1950 [Dec. 9, 1949; Dec. 9, 1949; Jan. 13, 1950; Jan. 23, 1950; Feb. 6, 1950; Feb. 6, 1950; Feb. 10, 1950; Feb. 10, 1950], No. 30142/50. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XL(c)] A tuning indicator tube or the like comprises a long narrow fluorescent screen on which an indication is produced in the form of a luminous column, and a cathode which is arranged so that its longitudinal axis is in the same plane as the longitudinal axis of the luminous column, the cathode being so thin in relation to the maximum width of the luminous column, and the remaining electrode or electrodes and the tube envelope being so arranged, that a clear view of the luminous column may be obtained from a view-point that lies on the same side of the screen as the cathode. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the tube comprises a fluorescent screen 3, a control electrode 2 in the form of a diaphragm provided with a V-shaped aperture, and a cathode 1 which is preferably directly heated but may be semi-indirectly heated. The indication is in the form of a line of variable length and the screen is viewed in the direction of the arrow 4 so that the cathode is seen in front of the screen. The cathode may be heated by the anode current of one or more valves in a radio receiver so that the cathode temperature is changed simultaneously with any change in the length of the luminous column to give a supporting indication. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the electrode 7 corresponds to the electrode 2 of Fig. 1 and two additional electrodes 5, 6 are provided to control the luminous intensity or the width of the luminous column. The luminescent screen may be viewed through a cylindrical lens which may be attached to the envelope; the lens may be grooved on the side facing the screen as shown in Fig. 10. As an alternative the screen may be viewed edgewise through a plurality of thin glass plates stuck together. The backing plate for the fluorescent screen may be roughened or may be provided with horizontal grooves 100, Fig. 12; preferably a silver coating is provided on the backing plate before the application of the fluorescent material.
