Abstract
690,756. Electron beam apparatus; thermionic valves. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Sept. 7, 1950 [Sept. 9, 1949; Feb. 6, 1950], No. 22115/50. Class 39(i). An electron valve, for example a tuning indicator valve, comprises a luminescent screen of narrow elongated form which provides a luminous column, an electrode system for varying the length of a column, and an amplifier electrode system in addition. The whole length of the cathode 9 may be employed for each electrode system, the emission from one side of the cathode passing through a triangular aperture in a control diaphragm 11 to the luminescent screen 10 and the emission from the other side being used with a pentode electrode system which preferably has a variable mu characteristic and may be used for high-frequency, intermediate frequency, or low frequency amplification. The control electrode 15 of the pentode may be arranged to have a controlling effect on the total emission from the cathode so that the luminous intensity of the screen 10 increases with increasing signal. The luminous screen may be a thin layer of such small thickness that no charging takes place; the support is preferably provided with a conductive coating which may be thin enough to be transparent. The support may be a glass rod provided with a groove in which the luminescent material is deposited.
