Abstract

993,494. Electron beam apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 5, 1963 [July 12, 1962], No. 26882/62. Heading H1D. An electron gun includes a cathode 1, an anode 2, and a strip transmission line formed by an apertured strip inner conductor 4, which acts as a control electrode, and an apertured outer conductor extending transversely across the path between the cathode and anode. The gun is controlled by applying to the transmission line positive pulses of sufficient amplitude to overcome a negative bias applied to the inner conductor 4, which may have a grid 3 mounted in the aperture. The outer conductor comprises upper and lower portions 5 and 6 and is coupled to the inner conductor through a condenser 7 and an optional resistor 8 which, if present, has the same impedance as the transmission line and absorbs the control pulses. If the resistor 8 is omitted a sharp-fronted incident pulse is reflected with a change of polarity to provide a resultant control pulse the duraton of which (e.g. 10<SP>-3</SP> Á sec.) is largely independent of that of the incident pulse. The aperture in the upper portion 5 of the outer conductor is shaped to provide a beam forming electrode and may be provided with a screen grid 9. A mounting arrangement is described (Fig. 5, not shown) in which the electron gun is supported from a plate which may be the end plate of the vacuum chamber of an electron accelerator.
