Abstract
657,701. Automatic volume control. SNEATH, O. B., and KNIGHT, E. A. Aug. 27, 1948, No. 22715. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (c)] In an amplifying system incorporating volume compression and also a manual gain control, a voltage derived from the rectified output of a later stage is applied to one grid of an earlier stage and a manually controlled bias is applied to another grid and/or the anode of the earlier stage. In the deaf-aid circuit, Fig. 3, for amplifying sounds picked up by the piezo-electric microphone M, the rectified output of the stage V 6 is applied to the control grid of the first stage V 4 for effecting volume compression, and the manual control is effected by the rheostat R 13 which changes the potentials of the anodes and screen grids of valves V 4 , V 5 . The circuit shown is suitable for use with low high-tension voltages, e.g. 20V. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the anode voltage of a single stage is derived from a manually controlled tapping on a resistance across the H.T. supply. In a further modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the anode and screen potentials are obtained from a tapping on the screen grid resistor of the subsequent stage.
