Abstract

923,428. Automatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 26, 1962 [Jan. 27, 1961], No. 3000/62. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] A common emitter transistor amplifier T has a rectifier D 1 connected across the signal input circuit and has the gain controlled by a potential applied to the transistor and the rectifier through a further rectifier D 2 . Rectifier D 1 becomes progressively more conductive as the gain of the transistor is reduced by the control voltage so that when the transistor is cut-off the rectifier maintains the input impedance at a value more appropriate to the preceding stage. Rectifier D 2 isolates the control potential source from the transistor at full gain. The control potential may be derived from speech voltages through a rectifier, amplifier and a rate of change of control modifying network. Preferably the potential source has an impedance equal to the forward impedance of rectifier D 2 .
