[Class 40 (iv)] The volume of sound emitted by a loudspeaker 1 is controlled in accordance with the loudness of the applause or other noise of the audience by an arrangement whereby the gain of the amplifier 2 feeding the loudspeaker is controlled by a microphone 3 located in the auditorium and the output of the amplifier exerts a compensating effect for the sound picked up from the loud-speaker. The control voltage from the microphone 3 is obtained through an adjustable resistance 7 from a resistance 8 fed through an amplifier 5 and rectifier 6, while the compensating voltage from the amplifier 2 is obtained from a resistance 11 fed through a rectifier 14 and is adjustable by means of resistances 12, 13. These voltages are combined in opposition and control the gain of the amplifier 2, preferably by varying the grid bias of variable-Á valves.
