Abstract

535,413. Television ; valve amplifying circuits. HAZELTINE CORPORATION. Aug. 8, 1939, No. 22870. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1938. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A television video-frequency amplifier with amplitude discrimination for increasing contrast &c. comprises two valves, one repeating the whole of the amplitude range and the other a selected part of the amplitude range, the outputs being combined to develop a composite signal of the required contrast &c. In Fig. 1, the control circuit of valve 21 is connected across the cathode resistance 22 of valve 20, resistance 22 and bias potential 23 being adjustable. Valve 20 repeats the whole amplitude range but potential 23 is adjusted so that only signals above a certain amplitude are repeated by valve 21. Adjustment of resistance 22 controls the negative feed back and also the amplitude of the signal applied to valve 21, these effects opposing each other. In Fig. 3, the signal is applied to the grids of both valves 20a, 21a, an additional opposed battery 27 in the circuit of valve 20a causing this valve to saturate for signals above a certain value. The adjusting-devices of batteries 27, 23a are ganged as shown at U. The composite characteristic of valves 20a, 21a may be such as to increase the amplification of the black or white parts of the picture, or of both black and white relative to the grey parts, while the overall amplitude range remains substantially constant for all adjustments.
