Abstract

447,493. Cathode-ray tubes. NICOLL, F. H., 24, Basildene Road, Hounslow West, and ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Blyth Road, Hayes, both in Middlesex. Nov. 19, 1934, No. 33294. Addition to 431,327. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode-ray tube provided with accelerating and decelerating electrodes in the manner described in the parent Specification, the decelerating electrode, used for modulating purposes, comprises an apertured diaphragm in which the thickness of the material surrounding the aperture substantially exceeds one-tenth of the diameter of the aperture, or comprises a plurality of apertured diaphragms located one behind the other in the electron path. A single diaphragm may be of uniform thickness and is provided with a cylindrical or tapered aperture or with an aperture, the periphery of which is curved, e.g. partly circular, as shown in Fig. 8. The required thickness around the aperture may be obtained by an extension 8a, Fig. 3, which may be cylindrical, conical or flared and may be located on either side thereof. When two diaphragms are provided, the sizes of the apertures therein may be equal or the aperture in the diaphragm nearer the cathode may be smaller or larger than that in the other. Three diaphragms may be provided and the diameter of the aperture in the middle diaphragm, and also the diameter of the central part of the aperture of the diaphragm shown in Fig. 8, may be as small as possible.
