Abstract

766,158. Ion-trapping in cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 12, 1954 [Feb. 19, 1953], No. 4195/54. Class 39(1). An electron gun system for a C.R.T. comprises a cathode 1 and an electron lens system 3, 4 coaxially arranged, the lens system including a hollow cylindrical ion trap 4 closed at both ends by apertured diaphragms, the centre of the aperture in the diaphragm 5 nearer the cathode 1 being displaced from the axis of the system, in which the diaphragm 5 is curved, e.g. spherically, so as to be convex towards the cathode, the aperture being cut in the curved portion of the diaphragm. The aperture can be in the form of an ellipse, in order to avoid astigmatism, in which the ratio of the major axis to the minor axis lies between 1À14 and 1À16. The major axis of the ellipse can be arranged parallel to a magnetic field transverse to the axis of the system produced by an ion trap magnet.
