Abstract

626,671. Cathode-ray tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 7, 1946, No. 33138. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1945. [Class 39 (i)] An anode structure for a cathode-ray tube, such as an electron microscope or an electron diffraction instrument, comprises a movable portion having a plurality of apertures therein, a fixed portion, means for maintaining an electrical connection between the portions, and means external to the envelope of the tube, whereby the position of the movable portion may be varied to direct the electron beam through a selected one of the apertures on to a viewing screen. Fig. 2 shows a plan of an anode and Fig. 4 shows a section along the line 4-4. The fixed portion 12 has an aperture 15 which is covered by the movable disc 16 containing two holes 17, 18, one approximately four times the diameter of the other. The disc 16 may be moved by two rods 25, 26, which bear on rods 29 operated from outside the tube by a rack and pinion. In this way either of the two apertures 17, 18 can be brought into the path of the electron beam; the larger aperture may be used for focusing and the smaller for electron diffraction experiments.
