Abstract

546,846. Cathode-ray tubes. HAZELTINE CORPORATION. July 1, 1941, No. 8280. Convention date, July 25, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode ray tube the thermionic cathode 26, Fig. 2, is surrounded by a control electrode 14 whose external diameter is less than 0.15 times the internal diameter of the first anode 17; this may fit into the glass neck 11 of the tube or be a coating of colloidal graphite. The end of the electrode 14 may fall short of or project beyond the plane at the end of the anode 17 and perpendicular to the tube axis. Further magnetic or electro-static focusing means are used to direct the beam on to a fluorescent screen. The cathode is held by a steatite plug 27 in the electrode 14, which is mounted in the coned insulator 23; stiff rods 25 passing through holes in the insulator form supports therefor and act as leads. A getter 32 is housed in the cone. In a modification the cathode 26, Fig. 3, is held in the electrode 14 by spacing discs 35, the electrode having a perforated cap 33. The internal diameter of the electrode may be between 1-5 to 3 times the diameter of the cathode diameter; the aperture 30 in the electrode may be ¢ to ¥ the cathode diameter.
