Abstract
505,632. Cathode-ray tubes. DEHN, F. B. (Hygrade Sylvania Corporation) Nov. 12, 1937, No. 31145. [Class 39 (i)] In a hard cathode-ray tube provided with a fluorescent screen, a thermionic cathode and magnetic deflecting means, the beam is directed away from the screen and a magnetic field, which extends at right-angles to the beam axis, causes deflection of the elec. tron beam, before or at the same time as it is magnetically deflected to scan the screen, so that it impinges upon the screen while the direction of the beam of negative ions remains substantially unaffected. The tube neck may be bent or may be inclined to the axis of the enlarged end of the tube so that the negative ions do not reach the screen. In one form, a cathode 22, Fig. 3, control grid 23 and anode 26 are mounted on a ceramic disc 25; a mica disc 27 may support the anode 26 from the tube neck. The anode is bent so that the electrons are deflected by the field through the aperture 36 and the ions are caught by the diaphragm 30. The final anode may consist of a graphite coating to which connection may be made through a contact 9, Fig. 4. Scanning may be effected by two magnets 45,46 and the magnet 46 is additionally excited by current supplied from a battery 48 through a variable resistance 49 to produce a deflection of the beam. In a further form, the beam is deflected within the second anode 26a, Fig. 5, which is registered with respect to the first anode 26 by glass beads 26b. The graphite coating on the end of the tube may be connected to the anode 26a. Specification 442,511 is referred to.
