Abstract

498,703. Electron multipliers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and McLEOD, A. E. Oct. 9, 1937, No. 27498. [Class 39 (i)] In a multiplier of the type in which the electron stream is guided from one cathode to the next by the electrostatic fielc of positive "potentia plates" in conjunctior with a perpendicular mag netic field, the potential plate 2 positive to the nth cathode forms a mechanically integral member with the (n+1)th cathode 1, the members being so shaped that they can be assembled in a pile separated by thin insulators such as mica sheets, and held together by insulating supports other than the separating insulation, for example glass rods passing through the holes 8, 9. The primary cathode may be photo-electric, or thermionic with a control grid supported between mica end spacers. The last member before the collecting electrode has only a depending plate 2 and a gauze screen covering the aperture 5. Small tubular resistors are connected to each electrode within the envelope. The portions 7 may act as cooling fins for the cathode. Specification 478,262 is referred to.
