Abstract

497,359. Thermionic valves. DODDS, J. M., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 18, 1937, No. 16967. [Class 39 (i)] A push-pull valve, which comprises a cathode on each side of which is arranged a control grid, screen grid and an anode, has a boxlike central metal envelope member through which pass laterally the conducting supports for the cathode and the control grids and also carries the screen grids so that in conjunction therewith the screening between the anodes and the control grids is completed. A brass or copper box-like ring 1 has demountably sealed thereto tubular insulators 2, 3 which are sealed demountably by plates 4. The cathode 6 which consists of a mesh, as described in Specification 478,373, or of parallel-connected filaments is clamped and supported from the member 1 in the manner described in Specification 497,362. The control grids 7, 8 consist, as described in Specification 497,361, of mesh windows carried in copper or brass rings 26 which are supported from the member 1 by thick copper or brass strips 27. Copper or brass cooling tubes 30 may be soldered to the rings 26 which are drilled so that the wires of the control grid may be threaded therethrough. An insulating or metal bar extends between, and is parallel to, the members 27 to which it is screwed by insulating pegs ; the bar is screwed to the member 1. The screen grids 9, 10 are carried in rings 31 having cylindrical extensions 32 which fit into recesses in the member 1 ; flanges 33 increase the screening. A flange on that side of the ring 31 facing the control grid is undercut at its outer periphery and is pro-. vided with two sets of cuts at right-angles to form pegs on which the grid wire is wound. Each anode has a conical face 39, is screwed into the plate 4 and is closed by a plate 38. Cooling fluid is supplied to a bore 36 and is expelled from the annular space between the anode and the insulator 3. Flanged rings 41 protect the seal. The member 1 is provided with cooling channels 42 and an evacuating conduit. As described in Specification 497,360, the valve may be provided with external circuits and screening boxes. The grids 9, 10 may form suppressor grids in which case the member 1 is maintained at earth potential and a separate lead is provided for screen grids. The leads of the cathode and of the control grids may be arranged at right-angles to one another. Specification 458,702 also is referred to.
