Abstract

521,967. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1938, No. 34773. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] In a gas-filled valve of the type in which the cathode is arranged within a cylindrical screen over the end of which is mounted a flanged grid insulated from the screen, the grid connection is inside the screen but is protected from the cathode by a channel-shaped shield attached to or forming part of the screen. In the arrangement shown the cathode 20 is of the directlyheated type and is formed of a sheet of metal folded as shown in Fig. 2. It is supported by the leads 19, 21 and supports 22 attached to, but insulated from, the bottom of the cylindrical screen 27. The midpoint of the cathode is connected to the screen by pieces 25, 26. The grid 41 is a flanged plate, which may be of graphite, perforated with holes which may be zig-zag or inclined. It is formed with an inwardly-projecting flange 44 which is bolted to a flange on the upper end of the screen by means of insulated bolts, insulating blocks being placed between the grid and the screen. The grid connection 34 is a rigid wire, or an insulated flexible wire, passing through a channel member 35 fixed inside the screen. The anode 17 is cup-shaped, enclosing the grid. The anode connection passes through a seal protected by the screen 11. A metal screen 8 for protecting the seal for the grid and cathode leads is mounted on, and insulated from, these leads. For attaching the cathode to the posts 22 by which it is supported on the grid then posts are provided with flat surfaces to which the cathode is soldered with the aid of reinforcing metal strips, different arrangements of which are described.
