Abstract
609,500. Electron discharge devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1945, No. 32491. Convention date, June 26, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device comprises a cylindrical copper anode 17, a cylindrical cathode 13 comprising a plurality of parallel filament elements 14 and a pair of cylindrical grids 21 and 22 each comprising a plurality of parallel bars 32 and 33 held together at their lower ends by spacing members 34 and 35, all the electrodes being coaxially mounted in an envelope comprising substantially cylindrical upper and lower insulating portions 3 and 4 joined to an annular copper member 5 by knife edge seals 6, the lower insulating portion 4 being joined to the anode 17 by a knife edge seal 18. The grids 21 and 22 are mounted on conical conducting members 23 and 24 respectively, the conical member 23 being connected to the annular member 5 acting as a low impedance lead and the conical member 24 being insulated therefrom by insulating washers 25. The conical members 23 and 24 are arranged close together to provide a substantial capacity therebetween and a conductor 26 acting as a high impedance lead is connected to the conical member 24 and passes through a hermetically sealed opening 27 in the annular member 5. The lower ends 15 of the filament elements 14 of the cathode are connected together by a nut 16, alternate upper ends of the filament elements 14 being connected to conducting rods 11 and 12 connected to metallic rings 9 and 10 attached to leads 7 and 8 respectively. Each of the bars 32 of grid 21 is radially aligned with its corresponding one of bars 33 of grid 22 to provide beam paths leading from the filament elements 14 to the anode 19. The lower portion of the anode 17 may be provided with vanes 20 adapted to be cooled by either blasts of air or by a circulating liquid.
