Abstract

521,199. Cathode-ray tubes. HARRIES, J. H. O. Nov. 9, 1938, Nos. 32464 and 34983. [Class 39 (i)] In a beam valve such as a heavy current relay or frequency multiplier the beam is maintained by a lens system comprising an electron permeable electrode E, a deflecting electrode D at a lower steady potential than the electrode E and an accelerator electrode G2 near the cathode A. The cathode is surrounded by a shield B at near zero bias and between the grid G2 and the cathode is a negatively biassed grid G1, the wires of the grids G1, G2 being placed very close to deflect the electrons from the accelerating grid G2. The cylindrical deflecting electrode D surrounds the beam along part of its path. The permeable electrode consists of spaced rings e with segments e<SP>2</SP> carrying inwardly projecting divided wires e<SP>3</SP>. Beyond this electrode is an anti-cross-field grid F ; it consists of an annulus f<SP>1</SP> carrying wires f<SP>2</SP> and partition plates f<SP>3</SP> providing three recesses, a central one for the main carbon output anode T and side recesses for the sub-anodes T1. The electrode F is at substantially lower bias than the electrode E (1) to screen the output anode from changes in voltage of the electrodes E, Dn and (ii) to prevent cross flow of secondary electrons between the main to the sub-anodes T, T1. The main anode is at the same potential as the electrode E and the anodes at a potential between this and the potential of the electrode F. The cathode, shield B, grids G1, G2, and electrode E are supported by wires passing through the pinch H ; the wires d<SP>1</SP> to the deflecting plates pass through a side tube X ; the main anode is supported by a tungsten rod s and the sub-anodes and the electrode F by wires arranged radially to pass out through the side wall of the tube. The support rods care welded direct to the annulus f<SP>1</SP> but the rods d are welded to wires on the annulus to allow movement. According to the second Provisional Specification the electrode D may be divided into more than two sections to receive various deflection impulses ; the electrode E may have slats or perforated plates in place of the wires. The tube may work as a selfoscillator. Specifications 380,429 and 521,246 also are referred to.
