Abstract
422,413. Discharge apparatus. SCHWERIN, P., 6, Farwell Road, Sidcup, Kent. May 6, 1933, No. 13272. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] Two thermionic systems are so arranged that their interelectrode gaps do not overlap, and one of the systems creates a conductive region influencing the electrodes or the interelectrode gap of the other system, means being provided for modifying or suppressing the conductive region to start, stop or modulate the second discharge. In one form, Fig. 1, the controlling system consists of a cathode b and a tubular anode c, whilst the controlled system consists of a cathode d and a flat anode e. The envelope may be evacuated or gas-filled. A pair of plates f serves to direct the beam for the system b, c, or a magnetic control may be used. In other methods, the potential of the anode c or the temperature of the cathode b may be modified, or a control grid inserted. In a modification, an apertured diaphragm gives the electron beam a flattened cross-section and the electrodes of the second system are inclined to one another so that deflection of the beam in a direction normal to its plane causes it to traverse a varying interelectrode gap in the second system. In another modification, either or both of the electrodes d, e is given a shape which produces a desired effect upon the beam as shown for example in Fig. 4. In another modification a beam of flattened cross-section is given a rotary or oscillatory movement by electrostatic or electromagnetic means. More than one controlled system may be provided in conjunction with a single controlling system. Fig. 7 shows a circuit which may be used for generating oscillations. The circuit to the control electrode p has a coil p<2> coupled to a coil p<4> in the circuit of the system d, e. Modulation may be effected by varying the anode potential or the potential between the two systems. Voltages to be amplified are applied to deflecting plates, the amplified voltage appearing across a coil connected in series in the anode circuit of the system d, e. Fig. 10 shows a modified construction of tube in which the first system consists of a cathode r, a control grid s and an anode t through which current may be passed. The second system comprises four anodes u and cathodes v. Screens w are provided. A control grid may be inserted between the electrodes of the second system.
